A Branded Sender ID allows your business to replace generic phone numbers or standard shortcodes with your company name (e.g., AVENUE, ZENI, or YOURBRAND) in the recipient's SMS inbox.
In Kenya, the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) and mobile network operators (Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom) strictly regulate alphanumeric sender headers to prevent fraud, smishing, and unauthorized brand impersonation.
This guide outlines the regulatory requirements, registration pricing, required documentation, and approval timelines for registering your custom Sender ID.
1. Regulatory Requirements & Sender ID Rules
To comply with CAK telecommunications standards:
- Maximum 11 Characters: Alphanumeric Sender IDs cannot exceed 11 characters (including spaces, though spaces are strongly discouraged).
- Alphanumeric Only: Allowed characters are
A-Z,a-z, and0-9. Special symbols (@,!,?,#,&) are strictly prohibited by telecom SMSCs. - Direct Brand Alignment: The requested Sender ID must directly match your registered business name, Certificate of Incorporation, or registered trademark.
- Prohibition of Generic Words: Generic financial or promotional terms (e.g.,
LOANS,OFFERS,ALERTS,CASH,PROMO) are rejected by carrier compliance desks.
2. Network Pricing & Approval Timelines
Registration fees represent one-time setup charges paid to mobile network operators. Once approved, your Sender ID does not incur recurring monthly renewal fees:
Network Option | One-Time Fee | Approval Timeline | Networks Covered |
All-Network Bundle (Best Value) | KSh 16,750 (Save KSh 750) | 2 to 4 Business Days | Safaricom, Airtel & Telkom simultaneously |
Safaricom Dedicated | KSh 6,500 | 2 to 4 Business Days | Safaricom Kenya subscribers only |
Airtel Kenya Dedicated | KSh 6,500 | 1 to 2 Business Days |
3. Required Registration Documentation
Before submitting your application, have the following documents ready in PDF format:
- Letter of Authorization (LoA): A signed and stamped letter on your official company letterhead authorizing Nyota Imara Technologies (and our telecom gateway partner TextSMS) to route traffic under your Sender ID.
- Certificate of Incorporation / Business Registration Certificate: Official registration document issued by the Business Registration Service (BRS) of Kenya.
- National ID or Passport of Company Director: Scanned copy of the primary director's identification document.
- (Optional / If Applicable) Trademark Registration Certificate: Required if the requested Sender ID differs from your legal corporate registration name.

- Go to Sender IDs in the left sidebar (
/senders). - Click "Request Branded Sender ID".
- Enter your requested alphanumeric header (e.g.,
MYBRAND). - Select your target network configuration (e.g., All-Network Bundle or Safaricom Dedicated).

5. Sending Messages While Awaiting Carrier Approval
You do not need to pause your business while waiting 2–4 days for carrier approval:
- Default Platform Sender: You can dispatch transactional OTPs and customer alerts immediately using our pre-approved shared sender header:
TextSMS. - Automatic Cutover: Once your custom Sender ID receives carrier approval (
status: "active"), your campaigns will automatically dispatch under your branded name.
6. Common Pitfalls & How to Troubleshoot
Pitfall A: "My Sender ID application was rejected by Safaricom."
- The Cause: The requested name was too generic (e.g.,
QUICKLOANS) or did not match the business name on your Certificate of Incorporation. - The Resolution: Submit an updated Letter of Authorization requesting an acronym or variation that clearly aligns with your registered company name, or provide a registered trademark certificate.
Pitfall B: "My application status says 'Pending Payment'."
- The Cause: The application was drafted, but the one-time network submission fee was not settled.
- The Resolution: Open sms.nyotaimara.com/senders, click on your pending application, and settle the registration fee.
